Jenny Beavan wore an outfit that reflected her work on the film that her designs were nominated for. She wore a nice pair of black pants, a matching top, a scarf (which is something of a Thing™ with her wardrobe), and a jacket that directly referenced Fury Road.
I give approximately zero fucks whether people on the internet find her attractive. She’s a talented costume designer who wore clothing she felt comfortable in and a jacket that is at the very least shiny and chrome, communicating her place as the odd one out in a heavily historically-influenced set of nominations. Her work was great, and quite different from the work the Academy generally honors.
Now, can we get back to talking about the Academy’s old-fashioned mentality about… everything? Because that’s something we need to work on.
THIS GOOD LORD THIS
Costume designers aren’t actresses. They don’t make a living from their own appearances. God bless Jenny Beavan for saying “this is who I am, this is what I was while I was doing the work you’re acknowledging, deal with it.”
I’m torn between “Women who aren’t stick-thin, gorgeous, ultra-feminine-presenting and under 25 just aren’t fucking allowed to exist, anywhere, in any walk of life” (speaking of the internet’s previous verdict on Mary Beard) and “That is a cool jacket, if I ever somehow end up at an awards ceremony for something I’m dressing like her.”
Ms Beavan demonstrates the difference between fashion and style.
And people weren’t clapping? They should’ve been giving her a V8 salute.
